The Nohn Waterfall

When the first warm rays of sunshine in spring awaken the vegetation, a short trip to the Eifel region is a perfect way to escape the gray monotony of winter and welcome spring.

Near Hillesheim, the Nohn Waterfall is a must-see, situated between the towns of Üxheim, Kerpen, and Nohn. It is also known as the Dreimühlen Waterfall and is clearly a very popular and unusual tourist attraction.

We find the trailhead parking lot on the L68, a country road leading southwest from the village of Nohn. Parking fees may apply.
From here, the relatively easy hiking trail begins, which is very well signposted. Trails in this area can be varied in length; our route is about 3 km long and therefore easy to manage.

Not far from the parking lot, we pass a small chapel via well-paved paths. Directly behind it, we find the Nohner Mill. A small café here offers food and drinks for those on the go or for a relaxing break.

Just beyond the mill, we follow the path along the Ahbach stream. Nuki enjoys a little dip, and the water is clearly tasty enough for him. A relaxed atmosphere pervades this spring day, with the gentle flow of the water, the fresh green of the grasses, and the first blossoms all around, while the deciduous trees are just beginning to bud.

Signposts guide us along the upper part of the stream, which will later plunge into a free fall. A descent of steps brings us directly to this waterfall, which cascades down a rock heavily covered in moss.

It's the overall picture that impresses here. Looking closer, you'll find interesting tiny details on the hillside: small caves, water trickling intriguingly over the moss, and a perfectly placed wooden walkway around the waterfall.

There are plenty of places to sit, some benches, some boulders, all inviting you to linger by the waterfall. The combination of the scenery and the soundscape is incredibly calming. The birdsong further enhances the experience.

It's like a little escape from everyday life combined with a natural sightseeing tour. We take it all in for a while before continuing on our way.

We decide to return via the lower path and follow the Ahbach stream. A small concrete channel channels the water in sections. Along the way, we notice some unusual stands of trees, which are interesting enough to warrant a closer look.

The surrounding area offers even more, so longer hikes can be planned if desired. Those planning such hikes should always include the waterfall as part of their route.
